Fete de la Musique 2023

On the occasion of “Fête de la musique”, Alliance Française de Brunei Darussalam organised the “Fête de la musique 2023 in Brunei Darussalam” on June 16, 17 and 18 2023.

The event was a success because the “Fête de la Musique” music festival had not yet been organised in this format, open to the public, free and involving young local music groups. Almost 15 passionate music groups, music schools and singers performed live at three different venues: the community space of the Baiduri Bank headquarters for the opening on Friday June 16, the premises of the Alliance Française de Brunei Darussalam on Saturday June 17 and the Peak Club Hall on Sunday June 18.

The event brought together various artists presenting a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, classical, folk, rock and pop. The opening night saw performances from local & renowned music schools, featuring a children's choir followed by the interpretation of music teachers, then a young group, Elisha Tiga Eksperiment which modernises traditional local music with jazz in order to bring them closer to Bruneian youth.

The Alliance Française had already collaborated with Yippy Tune Music School a few years ago and it was with mutual interest that the music school participated.

The second day took place in the premises of the Alliance Française, with the participation of groups and singers such as UBD Phonemics club, from the University of Brunei Darussalam, Rofini Zainal who sang Nour’s ‘first love’ in French.

Sunday afternoon hosted rock, pop and pop funk bands, Abby Skandar, Secret Signal, Santan or even Chlorine, enthuse visitors in the Peak Club Hall, a renowned sports club welcoming families and athletes alike, and which had for the occasion open to non-members in order to attract a varied audience and take advantage of the food stands and artisanal products present on the day thanks to Borneo Made.

The Alliance Française de Brunei Darussalam is proud and delighted to have been able to offer a platform to musicians and artists to perform live during an event open to the public and therefore approved by local authorities in order to celebrate the “Fête de la musique” in the same way as in France and other countries in the world.

Financial support from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs through the Embassy of France in Brunei as well as Baiduri Bank, for also hosting the opening of the event at its head office, were of great help.

The organisation was possible thanks to the collaboration with Iski Musik, a local music event company who managed artist relations, volunteers and logistics (sound and equipment).

The “Fête de la musique au Brunei Darussalam” received media coverage with a feature in Borneo Bulletin, the national newspaper, which was then relayed on social networks and allowed to increase the visibility of the event, the artists, Iski Music , partners and Alliance Française.

The CEO of Baiduri Bank confirmed that events like this, “which highlight local artists, are one of the ways to enrich the lives of our community in Brunei”.

The President of the Alliance Française de Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah declared that “the ‘Fête de la musique’ is part of the French culture, and that celebrating the event in Brunei by presenting live music performed by local musicians and artists helps promote artistic expression and is a contribution to the country's creative industry.”

This 2023 edition of the ‘Fête de la Musique’ provided an intense musical experience, enriching for all and was an opportunity to work closely with artists, volunteers, partners and local organizations involved to ensure its organization: to be renewed!
